Massimo Roma was born in Albano Laziale (Rome), Italy, on 1965. He received the M.S. degree in Mathematics (summa cum laude) from the University of Rome “La Sapienza” on October 1988. He received the Ph.D. degree in Operations Research from the University of Rome “La Sapienza” on October 1995.
From August 1, 1996 to December 31, 2004 he was Assistant Professor of Operations Research with the Department of Computer and Systems Science “A. Ruberti" (now Department of Computer, Control, and Management Engineering) of the University of Rome “La Sapienza”.
From January 1, 2005 he is Associate Professor of Operations Research with the Department of Computer, Control, and Management Engineering “A. Ruberti”, of the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. He currently teaches courses on Operations Research in the B.S. and M.S. program in Management Engineering and in Computer Engineering with the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Rome “La Sapienza”. He usually is the advisor of several Bachelor and Master degree theses. He is member of the advisory board of the Italian Research Doctorate (PhD degree) in Automatica, Bioengineering and Operations Research of the University of Rome “La Sapienza”.
Since April 2021 he is holder of the National Scientific Qualification for Italian Universities as Full Professor of Operations Research.
His research interests concern Nonlinear Optimization, focusing on the development of methods and algorithms for the solution of nonlinear optimization problems. In particular, he provided recognized contributions both from the theoretical and the computational point of view to large scale unconstrained optimization. Other topics of the research activity regards global optimization and the solution of constrained optimization problems with a particular structure. Finally, an important aspect of his research concerns the application of optimization and simulation models for the solution of real world problems.
He is author of several papers on these topics published on international journals, on edited volumes and on conference proceedings. He is the author of the section “Large scale unconstrained optimization” of the Encyclopedia of Optimization, C. Floudas, P. Pardalos (eds.), Springer, 2009.
Since 1994 he takes part in several research program of national interest in the field of Nonlinear Optimization funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research. In the years 1996-1997 he took part in the international UK-Italy (British Council-Italian Ministry of University and Research) research program “Exploiting negative curvature in large scale nonlinear programming”.
In the years 1997-2003 he was scientific consultant at the Institute of Systems Analysis and Computer Science (IASI) of the National Research Council (CNR) in Rome.
From 1995 to 2013, he was co-organizer (with G. Di Pillo) of a series of international Workshops (held every three years), on Nonlinear Optimization in the framework of the International School of Mathematics “G. Stampacchia”, at the Center for Scientific culture “E. Majorana” in Erice (TP), Italy. He was co-editor of the proceedings of the Workshop held in 2004 published in the volume “Large Scale Nonlinear Optimization”, G. Di Pillo, M. Roma (Eds.), Nonconvex Optimization and its Applications Series, vol. 83, Springer, 2006. He was co-editor of three special issues of the international journal Computational Optimization and Applications devoted to the Workshops held in 2007, 2010 and 2013.
On June 2011, he was co-founder of the Academic Spin-off ACTOR - Analytics, Control Technologies and Operations Research, between SAPIENZA - University of Rome and the venture ACT Operations Research whose activities mainly concerns optimization methods and decisions support systems based on mathematical models.
During 2013-2104 he took part to the project BuS-4H - Business Simulation for Healthcare, a collaborative research project (with SiliconDev LLC, University of Rome "Tor Vergata", Associazione Fatebenefratelli per la ricerca (AFaR) and SAPIENZA University of Rome) co-funded by European indirect funds through the Lazio Region of Italy (FILAS s.p.a.).
He was co-author of the work "Optimal Deployment of a cruise fleet” awarded as AIRO Best Application 2015 by the Italian Operations Research Society.
He was included in program commettees of national and international conferences.
He is currently reviewer for several international journals (e.g. Comp. Opt. App., J. Opt. Th. App., Opt. Meth. Soft., Opt. Lett., SIAM J. Opt., 4OR).
